LATEST MATCH REPORT... by Sam Salmon
Oliva Nova 24th January 2012
Stevie Patton, our Captain, welcomed 42 members and two guests (Mervyn Joseph, with a very good 36 points, and Dave Blakeley) to Oliva Nova, following last week's washout, to our individual stableford/team yellow ball competition. With just one player beating his handicap, the scores were reflective of the tough playing conditions at this time of year (not to mention the effect of the yellow ball induced collywobbles!).
The Yellow Ball Team prize was won by Danny Herron, Stevie Legg, Terry Leary and the Yellow Ball (Oh! and Ray Edmonds – welcome back Ray!) with a combined score of 165 stableford points. In the unenviable position of 'least points from the yellow ball' was Malcolm Wise who carved one out of bounds off the first tee, narrowly beating Ronnie Webb who also lost theirs on their first tee (the 10th).
The individual prize winners were:
Category 1 (Handicaps up to 17.9)
Winner – Colin Cooper with an excellent 38 points off 6.5
Runner up – Danny Herron (beware the injured golfer!) with 35 points off 12.3
Third – Stevie Legg, also with 35 points but off 17.7
Category 2 (Handicaps over 17.9)
Winner – Rob Westlands with 35 points off 20.2
Runner up – Johnnie Evans with 33 points off 19.7
Third – Brian West with 32 points off 18.5
The Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Colin Foster on the 3rd and Dave Blakeley on the 16th.
The 2's pot was shared by Dave Blakeley, Stevie Legg (with a snaking 40 footer!), Lin Rees and Jim Gillies (who also swept the Balls in the Water pot with his guess of 99 and won, on a card draw, the bottle presented by Lin and Mike Rees to mark their 40th wedding anniversary!!)
There was one match in our Summer (?) Knockout Competition, with the in form Terry Langley (receiving 9 shots – something wrong there!) shading Ian Robertson (who, by all accounts, had a poor day with the putter) by forty two and a half pence in new money.
Stevie closed the presentations by offering our collective congratulations to Lin and Mike Rees and also to Donna Green for her Hole in One achieved at Villaitana last Thursday. He finished with a 'final warning' regarding the importance of marking and checking score cards correctly – any scorecards handed in which contravene the R&A's rules will be subject to the appropriate penalty.
Next week's competition will be our first trophy competition of the year, the Copa de Escocia, and will once again be at Oliva Nova with registration at the normal time of 8:15 on Tuesday January 31st 2012.
